An ox year occurs every 12 years as with each of the Chinese signs.
Chinese new year is also known as the Luna new year or spring festival. I love that! Marking the end of winter, the new year lunar calendar as well as hope for new life – how lovely.
This
In Chinese culture, the Ox is a valued animal because of its role in agriculture. Seen as hardworking, positive and honest, logical, intelligent and fit for leadership. The metal Ox brings abundance in work and symbolises strength determination focus work ethics and endurance.
As Oxs have been used in the past to plough fields, we see this as a good time to plough new seeds into our life for future growth and abundance.
Working alongside others to build stronger communities or stronger foundations will also be beneficial
The Ox energy will be comfortable for some and harder for others – if you are keen to roll up your sleeves and put the effort in it will pay off, if you prefer to lark about and are easily distracted, it could be a harder year for you
It also will bring a stronger sense of community and you could reconnect with old friends.
In many Chinese cities, and I am sure we would if we could, street performers can be seen, dragon dances, lion dances, and festivities with gold’s and red fabrics, bringing with them riches and good fortune.
A family meal is custom, usually at home rather than a restaurant, reuniting family members, we can only dream of that this year! Dinner Is followed by Shou Sui, taking celebrations with the family outside for fireworks, staying awake through the night enjoying good times.
Over the next few days red envelopes with money in them is usually given to children from adults, believed to warn off evil energies and grant a long healthy life.
On the 15thday, the Yuan Xiao festival starts – the lantern festival, where people send wishes up and messages to their loved ones in spirit – I believe there are more animal friendly lanterns now as too many were found on the ground causing damage to our nature
